Without a candlestick, a candle is only a wax cylinder. With the right candle holder, it becomes a piece of decoration.

The size of the candle determines the type of candle holder needed — and it is important to match them correctly.

The candle holders for flat-heaters (also called photophores) are the most compact. They receive small wax discs 3 to 4 cm in diameter that burn 4 to 8 hours. These candles are often made of glass — transparent, amber, smoked — or openwork metal that casts shadows on the surrounding walls. Their reduced format allows them to multiply without bulking space, and to create light compositions very easily.

The candle holders for candles for pillars are open trays, cuts or supports that receive cylindrical candles of different diameters. The candle holder protects the surface below the melted wax, and highlights the shape and color of the pillar candle. These candlesticks are often made of metal, concrete, marble or wood — materials that hold the heat well.

The candle holders for fine and table candles — the classics we see in restaurants — are the candlesticks in the strict sense of the word. Their fine stem receives a tapered candle that often burns for several hours. These candlesticks are often the most elaborate in their design, because they are designed to be seen at the table, up to the eyes of the guests.

Materials and styles: which candle holder for what interior?

The gold brass candle holder is the classic of party tables and interiors that love the warmth of precious metal. It has been through the centuries and remains perfectly contemporary when it is chosen with clean lines rather than overloaded. A candlestick made of fine gold brass, for table candles, in the centre of a tablecloth made of natural linen — it is the most elegant and timeless fit for a dinner table.

The glass candle holder — transparent, amber, frosted or blown — enhances the flame itself. The light filtered by the glass creates a softer and more diffuse atmosphere than the naked flame. A thick glass photophorus placed on a buffet or coffee table creates a hot and intimate light point. The amber glass gives a particularly warm and intimate light.

The concrete candle holder is the counterpoint material of the flame — the hardness and coldness of the concrete in front of the heat and the softness of the wax that burns. This opposition works visually, and the result is very contemporary. Concrete blends well with wood, black metal and natural materials.

The ceramic candle holder can take a thousand shapes and colors. Sober and geometrical or fluid and artisanal, enamelled in terracotta or matt anthracite grey — ceramic is the most creative material for candle holders, and the most unexpected shapes are often the most successful.

The lantern is a special shape of candle holder, closed on several sides with glass or openwork metal. It protects the flame from air currents, creates shadows on the walls, and can be used indoors as well as outdoors.
