Outside, too, the light extends the art of living — and a well-lit terrace is worth an extra living room.
We invest in garden furniture, in plants, in pergola, in the pool — and we forget about lighting. Result: as soon as the sun sets, the terrace is empty. An outer space without outdoor light source adapted ceases to exist at nightfall, and with him all summer evenings that it could have welcomed. On the other hand, a well-lit terrace or garden becomes an additional living room — usable from aperitif to digestives, from the first spring sweets to the last nights of September. At Amberkiln, our collection of outdoor light fixtures covers all the needs: entrance wall sconces, garden terminals, recessed spotlights on the floor, light garlands, solar lanterns, LED projectors, portable terrace lamps — for every outdoor space configuration and every atmosphere sought.
What outdoor light fixture for what use?
The exterior lighting meets distinct needs that it is important to distinguish to compose a coherent and pleasant installation.
Safety lighting and marking is the primary function. The aim is to provide sufficient illumination of the accesses — entrance, driveway, outside staircase, gate — to move safely at night. The outdoor wall panels are the most common light fixtures for this use: fixed on either side of the front door or above, they illuminate the threshold and visually identify access from the street. Our stainless steel, lacquered aluminium or cast iron models are available in finishes that match all architectural styles — from sleek contemporary to traditional classic.
The terrace ambiance lighting is the decorative layer that turns a functional space into a living space. The light garlands suspended between two attachment points create a very effective vault for outdoor dinners — their warm and diffused light evokes party and carefreeness in a way that no projector can reproduce. The lanterns placed on the ground create islets of light around a garden lounge. The Solar lamps mobile phones can move around during the evening, follow the guests, adapt to the configuration of the moment – a flexibility that is very appreciated in spaces that change of use. Their autonomy and sensitivity to the sun have increased considerably in recent years, making them perfectly suited to gardens and alleys where electrical wiring would be complex to install.
The architectural and presentation lighting reveals the building and the garden after dark. The outdoor spotlights built into the ground facing a stone wall, a remarkable tree or a facade create shades and lights that give the garden a completely different nocturnal dimension. The Headlamps orientables illuminating a facade, gate or garden sculpture accurately — these exterior light fixtures produce the most spectacular effects and transform a common space into a decor.
IP index, materials and weather resistance
An outdoor light fixture is subjected to constraints that the interior does not know: rain, frost, UV, wind, insects, major thermal variations. These constraints result in specific technical requirements. The IP protection index is the first criterion to be checked. For an outdoor light fixture exposed to rain, a minimum IP44 is required – it guarantees resistance to water projections in all directions. For highly exposed areas — poolside, very humid north front, very rainy areas — an IP65 offers enhanced protection. The underground or ground light fixtures require an IP67 or IP68 that guarantees the waterproofing even in the event of temporary immersion.
The materials must be suitable for prolonged exposure to UV and humidity. Marine-grade stainless steel, anodized aluminum, UV-treated resin and reinforced polycarbonate are the most reliable materials for a durable exterior light fixture. Avoid untreated steel or low-end plastic light fixtures that rapidly degrade under UV and gel conditions.
Connected exterior lighting and motion detection
Outdoor light fixtures with motion detectors combine safety and energy saving — they automatically turn on as a person approaches and turn off after a programmable delay. Ideal for entrances, garages and driveways, they avoid forgetting the light lit all night long. The WiFi-connected outdoor lights allow you to control lighting from a smartphone, program time ranges and integrate them into a home automation system. LED compatibility is particularly important outdoors: LEDs are more resistant to temperature variations than incandescent bulbs, consume less and last longer – limiting interventions in height or in hard-to-reach areas.
