There are objects that change the atmosphere of a room in seconds. The candle is part of it.
Ignition of a candle is an almost ritual gesture. The light changes, the space warms up, a smell sets up — and something in the atmosphere changes. The candle doesn't really light up, it reveals. It reveals the reliefs of a room, gives depth to the shadows, causes light to wave and creates this imperceptible movement that makes a space alive. Perfume or non-scented candle: which one to choose?
This is often the first question. And the answer depends first and foremost on the use.
The scented candle creates a complete sensory experience — light and odour simultaneously. It fits perfectly in a living room, bedroom or bathroom. In a living room, a sweet and warm fragrance — sandalwood, amber, vanilla, fig tree — creates an immediate cozy atmosphere. In a bathroom, fresher notes — eucalyptus, mint, citrus — accompany the bath ritual with pleasant lightness. In a room, soothing fragrances — lavender, white jasmine, cedar wood — can help to relax before sleeping.
However, attention should be paid to the intensity of the perfume. A very intoxicating candle in a closed space can quickly become overwhelming. Aerate regularly and choose perfumes adapted to the volume of the room — a large, very fragrant candle for a large living room, a small flat-heater for small spaces.
The candle unscented is privileged when you want the atmosphere of the flame without interfering with the perfumes already present in the room — incense, diffuser of essential oils, kitchen — or simply when you are sensitive to artificial fragrances. It is also perfect for dining tables, where a perfume too present can compete with the aromas of the dishes.
Soya wax, beeswax, paraffin: what wax for what candle?
The Soya wax is the most widely used material in contemporary handcrafted candles. It is plant-based and burns more slowly and cleanly than paraffin, emits less soot, and keeps perfumes better. Soya wax candles generally have a burning time greater than their paraffin equivalents for the same format. This is the preferred choice for quality scented candles.
The Bee wax is the oldest and most natural wax. It burns even more neatly than soy wax, does not require added fragrance (it naturally smells honey), and has a particularly stable and golden flame. Bee wax candles are often more expensive but more durable. They are suitable for people who are allergic to synthetic or natural fragrances.
The Paraffin remains the most common for decorative candles and flat heaters. Less noble than soy or bee wax, it is also cheaper and allows for a wide variety of formats. For purely decorative use — colored pillars candles, table candles for a party — paraffin is often a perfectly suitable choice.
Candles and decoration: how to stage them?
A candle alone may be enough to create an effect — but a composition of several candles of different heights, in well-chosen candlesticks, is much more spectacular. Mix the sizes: a large pillar candle, two or three flat-heaters, a votive candle in a glass — the variation of height and light creates a very pleasant visual depth.
The candle colors can participate in the decoration of the table or space. White or ivory candles are universal and elegant; terracotta or ochre candles match warm and natural interiors; black candles work very well in bold contemporary interiors.
Never leave a candle on without surveillance, and always place it in a candle holder or on a heat resistant surface.
