The carafe is the object that turns tap water into a gesture of hospitality — and tells your guests that they deserve better than a plastic bottle on the table.
Often the impact of a beautiful carafe on the table. Yet it is one of the most visible objects of a meal — it is there from beginning to end, it circulates, it catches, it pours out. A blown glass carafe with generous shapes, a stained glass carafe with a cork stopper, a crystal carafe with its facets that capture light — these objects contribute to the aesthetics of the meal as well as plates or glasses. And unlike the latter, a beautiful carafe does not need to be multiplied by six or eight — it is enough to have one or two for the effect to be immediate. At Amberkiln, our range of carafes covers several uses and styles: clear or tinted glass water carafes, wine carafes for settling, juice carafes, capped northern carafes, recycled glass carafes — for all tables and occasions.
Water carafe, wine carafe, northern carafe: which model to choose?
The Water carafe is the most basic and necessary. It elegantly replaces the bottle of mineral water placed directly on the table — a gesture of presentation that immediately changes the apparent level of care of the meal. For filtered water or simply tap water, a beautiful transparent glass carafe with a capacity of 1 to 1.5 liters is enough. Some models with lid or cap keep the water cool longer. Our recycled glass water carafe, with its slightly green shade and natural bubbles, are particularly appreciated for their organic and warm appearance.
The wine carafe — or decanteur — has a specific function: to aerate the wine, to allow aromas to develop and tannins to relax. Its shape is designed to maximize the surface of contact between wine and air — hence the shapes of a very flared bulb, duck or amphora. For young and tannic wines (bordeaux, syrah, cabernet), a decantation of 30 minutes to 1 hour in carafe can turn a closed wine into a wine that is full of fruit. For old and delicate wines, the decantation must be short — just the time to separate the wine from its deposit. A beautiful crystal wine carafe is also a remarkable decorative object placed on a buffet or dessert — even empty.
The Northern capped carafe — cylindrical, with clean lines, with cork or glass stopper — is the format that has conquered contemporary tables for the last ten years. Its functional and elegant design, often inspired by Scandinavian studios, is suitable for both water and juice or milk. She sits on the dining table as well as in the refrigerator. Our thermal shock resistant borosilicate glass models can be moved directly from the refrigerator to the table.
Carafe in blown glass, crystal or recycled glass: what quality to choose?
The mouth blown glass gives carafes with generous and slightly asymmetrical shapes — each piece is unique. These carafes have a presence on the table that no industrial glass can match. Their thicker wall gives them a pleasant weight in hand and surprising robustness for such a delicate object in appearance. They wash by hand to preserve the accuracy of the blowing.
The crystal is the premium material of wine carafe. Its absolute transparency, incomparable shine and crystal-clear sound make it an object of fineness that ordinary glass cannot achieve. A well-cut crystal carafe captures and breaks down light as a prism — a spectacular candle effect. The crystal washes by hand and immediately dries to avoid traces.
The recycled glass is the most environmentally engaged material. Its naturally slightly coloured tint – green, amber or grey depending on the composition of the glass recovered – gives it a very appreciated organic character in contemporary interiors concerned with their impact. These carafes are robust, often go to the dishwasher, and their imperfect appearance is a claimed quality.
How to choose the capacity of its carafe?
For a table of 4 people, provide at least one litre of carafe for water — two litres if the meal is long or hot. For the wine, a standard bottle is 75 cl — a 75 cl to 1 litre carafe is sufficient for a bottle; if you decant several bottles, opt for a large 1.5 liter carafe. Juice carafe are often slightly smaller — 50 to 75 cl — because juices are used in smaller quantities. Whatever the capacity, choose a carafe that is wide enough to be easily cleaned inside — a carafe that is difficult to clean will be a carafe that is less used.
