A drink at the table is never neutral. it says something about what you drink, how you get it, how you pay attention to the food.

We don't always think about glasses with as much care as we should. Yet, a good glass changes the experience of what you pour into it — a wine drunk in a fine and well-scanned glass does not taste the same as in a thick and heavy glass. It's not pretension: it's physics and chemistry. The shape of the glass concentrates the aromas, the thickness of the edge conditions the touch on the lips, the weight of the hand influences the overall perception. And beyond these functional considerations, a beautiful glass on a table is part of the aesthetics of the whole as surely as the tablecloth or plates. At Amberkiln, our selection of glasses covers all uses and styles: water glasses, red and white wine glasses, champagne flutes, cocktail glasses, cups, whiskey glasses, coloured glasses, blown glass glasses in the mouth, recycled glass glasses in natural shades — parts of everyday life and exceptional parts.

Water glass, wine glass, flute, cup: what format for what use?

The shape of a glass is not arbitrary — it responds to specific uses that have been refined over centuries of food culture.

The water glass is the most versatile. High, straight or slightly flared, with a capacity of 30 to 40 cl, it welcomes water, juice, soda, iced tea. It is the glass that stays at the table from the beginning to the end of the meal. Its simple shape makes it easy to associate with any other glass — wine, champagne — without creating visual dissonance.

The red wine glass is wider, with a large chalice that allows the wine to open and the aromas to grow. Its ball or tulip shape concentrates aromas in the upper part of the glass. For the powerful tannins wines, a large glass with bordeaux with a very wide chalice is recommended; for the more delicate Burgundy wines, a more tightened glass to the top preserves the aromatic finesse.

The white wine glass is thinner and slenderer than the red glass. Its tighter chalice preserves freshness and concentrates the more discreet aromas of white wines. Some purists swear only by different glasses for each name — but for the vast majority of meals, a good, versatile white glass is enough.

The Champagne flute is recognizable among all. Its slender format preserves the bubble and concentrates aromas. The champagne cut (evasive saucer shape) is more decorative but less functional — the bubble escapes faster. For a quality champagne, the flute is required; for a sparkling cocktail or a spritz, the cut has its own charm.

The cup — footless, cylindrical or slightly flared — is the most casual and casual format. Perfect for everyday water, juice or cocktails, it is used both at the table and outside. Its robustness (less risk of breaking the foot) makes it a convenient choice for families or meals outdoors.

Blow glass, recycled glass, crystal: what quality of material?

The mouth blown glass is the higher craft level. Each piece is unique — slight variations in thickness, small air bubbles trapped in the wall, irregularities in shape. It is not a defect; it is the signature of the artisanal process. A blown glass in the mouth has a presence and a heat that no industrially molded glass can reproduce. It is used at the table but also as a decorative object — stored on an open shelf, it captures and diffuses light in a beautiful way.

The recycled glass — Recognising its slightly green or amber shade due to natural impurities of the recovered glass — is both more ecological and aesthetically attractive than the standard white glass. Its natural nuances give it a warm character very much appreciated in natural and organic interiors. It is resistant to everyday use and washes in dishwashers.

The crystal is the premium material par excellence. Its high mineral content (now unleaded in modern versions) gives it clarity, brightness and sound — that crystalline sound when tintered — that no ordinary glass can match. Crystal glasses are often thinner, lighter and brighter. They usually require hand washing to preserve their gloss and avoid the limestone deposit of the dishwasher.

Coloured, depolished or decorated glass: dare to personality

The transparent and neutral glass is the most universal — but not necessarily the most interesting. The Coloured lenses — electric blue, emerald green, amber, pink, black — create a table immediately more personalized and festive. A row of glass water glasses blown in different colors around a raw wood table, it is a composition that needs nothing else to be successful.

The Unbleached or engraved lenses — with hollow patterns on the wall — play with light differently from transparent glass. Their matte surface diffuses rather than reflects, creating a softer and more intimate atmosphere. They are particularly suitable for contexts where you want a refined table without being ostentatious.
