A teapot is the object that turns tea into ritual — and ritual at the moment.
There are few tablewares that have so many civilizations behind them. The teapot was born in China, was perfected in Japan, adopted by the English, declined by the Moroccans, redesigned by the Scandinavians — and in every culture, it took a different form that says something about how this culture conceives time, hospitality and care. Today, the contemporary teapot inherits all these traditions at once. It can be a craft piece in enamelled sandstone, a refined design object in borosilicate glass, a teapot in Japanese tetsubin cast iron, a Moroccan teapot in chiseled metal, or a Scandinavian model with sober geometrical lines. Ceramic teapot, glass, cast iron: which material to choose from?
The matter of a teapot affects the quality of tea as well as aesthetics — it is one of the few tablewares for which the functional and decorative are also closely related.
The ceramic or sandstone teapot is the most versatile. It preserves the heat well, does not transmit harmful aromas to tea (unlike metal), and is available in an infinity of shapes and colors. An artisanal stoneware teapot, with its slightly irregular glaze and deep tints — cobalt blue, forest green, white from China — is a beautiful object placed on a table as well as an efficient ustensil. It is suitable for all types of tea and washes easily. Most of our ceramic models go to the dishwasher, although hand-washing is recommended for hand-crafted parts.
The borosilicate glass teapot has the advantage of transparency — it shows the colour of tea that infuses, which is particularly attractive for floral teas (thea with flowers that flourish in water), red teas with rich colors, or coloured infusions. It is resistant to thermal shocks (cold to hot) and is easily cleaned — the glass does not hold any aroma. A glass teapot is particularly recommended for those who often like to change tea without previous infusions influencing the following.
The cast iron teapot — Japanese tetsubin style — is the premium option for serious tea lovers. Cast iron retains heat longer than any other material — a tea infused in a cast iron teapot remains hot long after the ceramic teapot has cooled. The enamelled cast iron inside is suitable for all teas; the unglazed cast iron (Japanese tradition) is reserved for boiling water and very tannic teas like pu-erh. These teapots are heavy, robust, transmitted from generation to generation if properly maintained. Never put a cast iron teapot in the dishwasher or let it soak in water.
The porcelain teapot is the teapot of the English tradition — fine, light, often decorated with floral motifs or hand-painted decorations. It is less insulating than sandstone or cast iron, but its elegance is incomparable for an afternoon tea or tea served in the rules of art. Choose the capacity of its teapot
Capacity is a criterion that is often underestimated when purchasing. One small teapot of 40 cl is made for a single person or two people who share a delicate tea — the great Japanese green tea crus or Taiwanese oolongs drink in small quantities and several successive infusions. One teapot from 80 cl to 1 liter suitable for two or three people for a daily tea or afternoon tea. One large teapot from 1.2 to 1.5 liters is made for tabbles — morning tea with family or tea served to several guests. Also check the size of the built-in filter or the availability of a removable filter — a teapot without a filter requires the use of a separate colander, which many people find impractical.
Teapot and accessories: forming a coherent set
The teapot never lives alone. It is accompanied by assorted or deliberately depainted tea cups, a teapot to protect the table from heat, a tea box to keep the leaves away from light and moisture, sometimes from a teapot heater (candle or gas dryer) to keep the heat during service. These accessories contribute to the staging of tea — a ritual that deserves to be treated, whatever the tradition to which one refers.
