There's something special about the relationship we have with a painting. A work is rarely chosen to fit with her sofa — it is chosen because it says something, because it creates emotion, because it makes a space exist otherwise. What painting for what interior style?
The question of style is inevitable — not to impose a rigid rule, but to avoid the obvious dissonances that can occur when you mix incompatible universes too hastily.
In a Scandinavian or minimalist interior, abstract black and white paintings, clean botanical compositions and tonal palette photographs work perfectly. The line is clear, the format is usually vertical or square, the simple frame — natural wood, fine metal or without frame on chassis. These paintings complete the aesthetic without overloading it.
In a bohemian or natural interior, one can go further in color and texture. Works with earth tones — ochre, terracotta, khaki green, beige — are naturally integrated. Botanical representations, African landscapes, ink geometric compositions, tropical plant illustrations — all these visual universes resonate well in a space that values natural materials and artisanal objects.
In a classic apartment or Haussmannian, We can afford more ambition in the frame itself — gilded, carved, moulded. Reproductions of masters, genre scenes, classical still lifes are part of this tradition without appearing dusty, especially when they are alongside contemporary elements that create an interesting temporal dialogue.
In a interior contemporary and urban, black and white street photographs, typography posters, graphic illustrations and very colorful abstract works are easily found. The often imported format — a very large shock board, a composition of several small formats in coherent grouping.
Large format, small format, wall composition: how to choose the size?
The size of a table — or a set of tables — in relation to the wall which hosts it is the most often poorly calibrated factor. A painting too small on a large wall floats in the vacuum; a painting too large crushes the room.
For a single table, a general rule: it should occupy between 57 and 75% of the width of the furniture or wall area above which it is hung. Above a 200 cm sofa, a table of 120 to 150 cm wide is well proportioned. Above a narrow dresser, a size of 60 to 80 cm will suffice.
The composition of several tables — wall gallery, frame wall — allows to deal with large surfaces with a flexibility that the single table does not allow. The challenge is to maintain visual consistency despite the diversity of formats: the same colour palette, the same type of frame, or the same theme are the thread. First, have the frames on the ground to visualize the composition before breaking the wall — this is the most valuable advice that can be given to avoid regrets.
The ideal hook height is between 145 and 155 cm from the ground, taking the centre of the work as a landmark. It is the height of the eyes of a middle-sized adult, and museums almost always stand there for this reason. In a corridor, one can descend slightly; in a space with very high ceilings, one can climb a little — but never too close to the ceiling.
